Research & Thought Leadership

Since it was established, TDI have carried out a number of ground-breaking pieces of research, both on our own and with others. A selection of some of our more important pieces are available to read here.

TDI maintain a research capacity and are always interested in developing new projects which advance the understanding of sexual harm prevention. As a small charity, we have worked with multiple organisations and funders to make such research possible, and we would be glad to talk to anyone interested in developing cutting-edge work.

Under the Surface: Notes on Four Discussions about Sexual Offending

This report is the outcome of a series of four forums TDI held in 2012 with professionals, stakeholders and community members on current and recurrent issues in sexual offending and public understanding. The forums resulted in a series of recommendations for policy-makers, included in the report.

Criminal Disclosure and National Sex Offence Laws within the European Union

A series of high-profile cases in the early 2000s highlighted inadequacies in the provision for effectively checking the criminal records of citizens from the EU member states who are seeking employment in the UK. While the UK has since left the EU, issues around voluntary criminal record checks for migrant workers remain.

Based on eight years of practical experience in promoting an inter-agency response, this report offers guidance on achieving fruitful multi-agency collaboration.

Assessing Risk in Young People who Sexually Abuse

The Derwent Initiative commissioned a piece of work with the aim of enabling those who work with adolescents who sexually abuse and their senior managers across a range of disciplines and organisations, both in the voluntary and statutory sector, to decide what resources and procedures they require for the assessment, referral, and appropriate intervention of these young people.

The Mental Health Needs of Young People who Offend

Following an approach by the North East Youth Justice Board for England and Wales, this research looked at the mental health needs of young offenders.

Elderly Sex Offenders in Social and Health Care

The Derwent Initiative (TDI), in correspondence with a number of local Social Services operating in the North East of England, identified possible and potential difficulties faced by elderly sex offenders in the social care system, particularly those experiencing mental health problems and learning disabilities.
