TRUSTEE & STAFF BIOGRPAHIES
Carole Howells BA, MA (Ed), MBA, MBE, Chair
Until 2009, Carole Howells was Director of the Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service (NCVS), one of the largest Local Development Agencies (LDAs) in the North East. She has wide experience of the issues affecting the voluntary sector, and of how the sector relates to other parts of society. She started life as a research psychologist, switching to voluntary sector management in 1983, when she went to work for NACRO, managing a national network of adult basic education centres. She came to Newcastle CVS in 1987, and has served as a governing member of a wide array of public and voluntary bodies, including the Community Foundation for Tyne and Wear, the Tyneside Training and Enterprise Council, Newcastle College, and the North East Regional Committee for the National Lottery Charity Board. Carole was awarded the MBE for services to the voluntary sector in 2001.
Sue Winfield LLB, OBE, Trustee
Sue's main career was in the Probation Service, retiring after 32 years when in the role of Deputy Chief Officer for the Northumbria area, National Probation Service. During this time she was involved at national level chairing a number of committees developing the work of probation in the criminal courts. Sue was one of the founder members of TDI, following the recognition after the Cleveland Enquiry that there was a need for an improved inter-agency approach to working with sexual offenders. Since April 2002 Sue has been Chair of Sunderland Teaching Primary Care NHS Trust, a 3 star Trust since the second year of its existence. In addition to being a trustee of TDI she is also trustee and currently chair of Helix Arts, a local registered charity developing projects which explores the role and potential of the arts in a social context.
Professor Don Grubin, Trustee
Don is Professor of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle and Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist at the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust. He trained at the Maudsley Hospital and the Institute of Psychiatry in London, and at Broadmoor Hospital. He is Project Director of the Sexual Behaviour Unit, a specialist service run in collaboration with the Northumbria Probation Service that provides assessment and treatment in cases where there is concern about the risk of sexually abusive behaviour. Don is a member of the Home Office Correctional Services Accreditation Panel for Offending Behaviour Programmes, the Department of Health and NIMHE Sex Offender Expert Group, and the Catholic Church Sexual Abuse Advisory Group for the Newcastle and Hexham Diocese. He is also an adviser to the HM Prison Sex Offender Treatment Programme. He has researched and published widely in relation to sexual offending.
Lucy Armstrong, Trustee
Lucy is Chief Executive of the Alchemists, a business providing entrepreneurial lead advice and coaching to fast growing businesses. Her early career was spent in venture capital with 3i international corporate mergers and acquisitions with Courtaulds Textiles and a period in the executive search industry, Tyzacks. She is a governor of Northumbria University, involved in assisting Newcastle University in their hi-tech spin-out companies and a member of the North East Industrial Development Board, supporting growing businesses in the North East. Until recently Lucy was Chair of a trans-Atlantic leadership and networking organisation, the British American Project. Lucy is engaged in Anglo-Us relations across the political, economic and arts spectra. An active member of HMP/YOI Castington's Independent Monitoring Board, Lucy is involved in monitoring the management of a young offender institution after six years in a similar role at a high security prison. She is also a national tutor for this 'watchdog' role reporting to the Home Secretary. Lucy was educated at Oxford, holds an MBA and is studying criminology.
Reverend Dennis Tindall, Trustee
Father Dennis is a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle and Child Protection Co-ordinator for the Dioceses since 1994. He has former experience as Diocesan Secretary, Director of Children's Rescue Society/Catholic Care North East, and Co-ordinator of Ministry to Priests Programme. He is Chairman of Northern Cross, the Diocesan monthly newspaper and currently also parish priest of St Mary's parish at South Moor, Stanley in North West Durham.
Dave Gardiner, Advisory Board Member
David is Director of Operations, Northumbria Probation Service.David joined the Probation Service in 1982 after a colourful early career and an education at Newcastle and Oxford Universities. He became Director of Operations for the Northumbria Probation Area in 2002. In his spare time he is currently busy refurbishing an old house in rural Northumberland and performing in a rock band.
Deborah Jenkins MBE, Chief Executive

In addition to leading TDI, Deborah is Chair of the South Tees Hospitals Foundation Trust, and runs her own company, Kindling Limited, which delivers project creation, consultancy and facilitation, exploring better ways of working together. She is also Visiting Professor on Leadership to the University of Newcastle, a Non Executive Director of the North East Strategic Health Authority, and Chair of the Barnard Castle Vision Partnership. Previously, she chaired AllTALKfm North East, a subsidiary of Ulster TV, was co-founder and European Director of Common Purpose, a national charity running leadership programmes, setting up and running collaborative programmes throughout the UK and in several European countries, and worked for the Industrial Society. Her many past voluntary and public service appointments include being Vice Chair of Newcastle City Health Trust, Board Member of Northern Arts, Chair of the Newcastle Healthy City Project, Governor of Newcastle College and Trustee of Aycliffe School, a secure unit for children. Deborah was awarded the MBE in 1995 for services to urban regeneration.

Before joining TDI, Sue spent five years in the South West and latterly her native North East as an independent consultant and facilitator working within public and voluntary organisations in the fields of leadership, organisational and partnership development and management of change. Sue is also an accomplished trainer and speaker, and has delivered a range of training programmes to diverse audiences. Prior to that Sue was South West Regional Director with Common Purpose working with decision makers across all sectors to achieve innovation and effective collaboration. Sue has served on the Boards of voluntary and community projects, strategic partnerships and private companies.

Hugh joined TDI in 2007. He has a background in marketing and promotion, including work for the Natural History Museum and running his own company in Munich.
Emma Lipscombe, Administrator

Emma joined TDI in 2010, having previously worked for Newcastle Council, The TUC and NCFE.
Mike Way, Associate
Mike has been involved in Social Care for more than 25 years as a practitioner and manager in the statutory and voluntary sectors. He has worked closely in child protection and protection of vulnerable adults policy, and also acts as a trustee for numerous voluntary organisations. He is a qualified teacher and psychotherapist.
Esther Salamon, Associate
Esther is a consultant with many years' experience of creating, developing and managing cultural partnerships across the voluntary, public and private sectors. Her areas of expertise include project and organisational development, management, fundraising, strategic planning and review.
Patricia Walsh, Associate
Patricia has worked with children and adolescents who experience severe social, emotional and learning difficulties in both the public and independent sector. From 1997 to 2006,she was joint Head of a Forensic Therapeutic Community working with adolescent males who are sexually harmful. She is currently training in Group Relations at The Tavistock Clinic, London.
Margaret Alderdice, Associate
Margaret has spent 23 years working in both operational and strategic roles for the Victim Support Charity in Teesside and has significant experience managing a voluntary organisation that is part of the criminal justice system. She has been involved in various voluntary and statutory organisations as a trustee/director.
During her time with Victim Support, Margaret was part of the National Training Team, delivering a wide range of courses from serious crime to staff and organisational development to staff within Victim Support throughout the country.
More latterly, Margaret has been developing a project for the Criminal Justice Board in Teesside.
Margaret has a BTEC Diploma in Textile Design and a BA Hons in Criminal Justice Studies.
